Secret Life of Bees and NY Times Bestselling Author, Sue Monk Kidd will help USCB celebrate the 10th anniversary of the USCB Lunch With Author series on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Beaufort. Kidd is launching the paperback tour of her memoir, Traveling with Pomegranates: A Mother-Daughter Journey to the Sacred Places of Greece, Turkey, and France, written with her daughter, Ann Kidd Taylor.
This memoir told in two voices is part travel story, part spiritual quest, and part induction into feminine passages. Set against the awe-inspiring backdrops of France and Greece, this intersecting autobiography chronicles an intimate mapping of two women—Sue MonkKidd, before the phenomenal success of her New York Times bestselling novel, The Secret Life of Bees, and her daughter, Ann Kidd Taylor—as well as the moving metamorphosis of their mother-daughter relationship.
Project Runway: Beaufort Stylereturns for the second “season” show, “Art of Couture Madness,” on Friday, September 24 at 7:30 PM at a new location – the USCB Performing Arts Center. “Art of Couture” class instructor Pat Wilcox has challenged her students to create fashions in four categories: everyday and formal wear; costumes; and tailored suits. Unlike the hit American reality television series Project Runway, where contestants are usually restricted by time, materials, and theme, Project Runway: Beaufort Style contestants are only restricted by their own creativity. Willcox has told her students to “have fun, create, let your mind’s eye run free, then capture your vision through sketches, fabric, and making your own patterns.” The students select their category(s), purchase their own material and work independently under the guidance of Willcox.
Teacher Willcox, owner of Pat Willcox Studio and Sewing Unlimited, has been a working artist for 20 years, with costume experience in the movie industry. She has worked on movies and television including, “Critical Condition,” “ The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “ Days of Thunder.” She started the class “Art of Couture” as a way to give back her knowledge of fashion design, reviving the notion that it’s more than a piece of clothing – it’s a work of art. She spends most of her time in class guiding her students’ creativity. Art of Couture students include: Barb Bradham, Meaghan Senn, Tina Prideau, Adam Rich, Stacie Van Helpern, Taisha Seymore, Sherry Morris, Phyllis Tisch, Heather Jarvis, Alicia Webb, and Jennifer Caninio.
“This project is the beginning of a wonderful partnership between USCB Performing Arts Center and the Art of Couture students,” said Willcox. We will be serving as the costume design team for all Beaufort Children’s Theatre and Beaufort Theatre Company productions this year. Productions range from the 1930’s (To Kill a Mockingbird) to 1960 (Godspell).”
All proceeds for Project Runway: Beaufort Style will go toward underwriting the cost of the Beaufort Children’s Theatre productions. Maleia Everidge will be the commentator for the evening event.
Project Runway tickets go on sale September 1. Tickets are general admission. Prices: $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and military, and $5 for students. Call USCB box office 521-4145 and leave a message to reserve your ticket.
The Beaufort Art Association will feature recent paintings and drawings by Pat Connor in an appealing exhibit entitled “Pets, People, and Other Animals.” The show opens on September 7 and runs through October 16. A reception for the artist, to which the public is cordially invited, will be held on Friday, September 17, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the BAA Gallery in the historic Elliott House, 1001 Bay Street at the corner of Charles Street in Beaufort.
The Hilton Head Island New Play Festival is an event unlike any other in the Lowcountry. It’s an opportunity for playwrights to receive feedback on their work from audiences outside New York and L.A. and hear a different perspective than they might find elsewhere. It gives Hilton Head residents the chance to hear brand new plays and shape the final product into something that speaks to them and their experiences. SCRC is becoming a testing ground for new voices and is an organization that is committed to nurturing American playwrights. The Hilton Head Island New Play Festival will also strengthen our relationship with the SCRC audience by providing a venue for frank discussion of the work while offering new audience members another way to experience theater on the Island.

“Some people call it “the sane version of Method acting,” said instructor Gail Westerfield, who is preparing to teach a class in Meisner Technique at ARTworks. “The class will be an introduction to the fundamentals of Sanford Meisner’s work, a practice that trains actors to be fully ‘in the moment’ on stage. Through a series of exercises, both experienced and inexperienced actors will learn what Meisner called ‘living truthfully in imaginary circumstances.’”
Class work will focus on relaxation and preparation, as well as creating character and building relationship with a scene partner. No previous training is required.
Westerfield has acted and directed for more than 30 years and trained intensively in Meisner Technique as an intern at Actors Express in Atlanta as well as extensively on her own since. When she’s taught this class in the past, she said, “The students really ‘got’ it. The beauty of this technique is that you can learn so much about yourself and the art of acting, even if you’ve never set foot on a stage before.”
A free showcase October 22 at ARTworks will provide an opportunity for friends, family, and fans of great acting to see the students perform the monologues and scenes they have worked on in class.
Students must be age 16 or over. Classes will be Mondays from 7-9 pm, August 23 – October 18. (There will be no class September 6). ARTworks is at 2127 Boundary Street (the K-Mart/Bi-Lo shopping center) in Beaufort. Cost is $150. Payment plans are available, but $50 is required at the first class. Class size is limited.
